As for finger eleven’s
first name - Rainbow Butt Monkeys - Black isn’t so quick to own up to that
embarrassing moniker.
“We were looking at
anything to help us with a name. Balderdash cards, the dictionary, Trivial
Pursuit - anything. That’s how bands end up with a name like Trademark
1987, by getting it off a board game.”
Deciding on finger eleven was a step above
Rainbow Butt Monkeys and Trademark 1987, but the name has generated some
speculation as to what exactly the Eleventh finger represents.
“Most commonly, people
think it’s a penis. That’s hands down the most common interpretation. Other
people think if you put your middle fingers up in the air together that’s
finger eleven. Neither is right. It’s funny how people are always looking
for the sexual reference. We could be called ‘Ice Bucket,’ and people would
wink and say, ‘Ice Bucket. Yeah I know what you mean.”
“Actually it comes from
one of Scott’s lyrics from the first album on the song ‘Thin Spirits.’
We were all rehearsing, and it’s hard to hear Scott above all the noise
we make, and that line just came through loud and clear above everything.
We asked him what it meant, and he said it was about a sixth sense or a
third eye pointing you in a true direction. We all liked it, and since
it’s very rare that we all agree on something - it passed the test, and
we had a new name.”
